The existential threat of climate change, the interlinked biodiversity crisis and the multiple impacts on both people and planet, must be addressed as a core economic challenge. In recent years, it has become clear that climate impact financing is a very effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fund and expand new environmental projects and improve local communities.

Climate impact financing is a way of paying for others to reduce emissions or absorb CO2 and thus take responsibility for your own emissions. For example, by planting trees to suck carbon out of the atmosphere as they grow, or by delivering energy-efficient cooking stoves to communities in developing countries. Of course, effective climate protection goes further than impact financing and includes as a preceding step the reduction of one’s own greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain. myclimate helps to create a roadmap for anyone who wants to take on this challenge. Here is a set of questions to start:

1. Baseline assessment: What is the status?

The foundation for sustainable success in business lies in a thorough examination of the existing situation. myclimate works together with a brand to produce a CO₂ balance, analysing existing measures, talking about the statutory framework and competitive environment, and the risks of climate change for the particular business model.

2. Setting goals and analysing opportunities: Where to head – how far and how quickly?

Identifying the areas where a brand can maximise their positive environmental impact over the short, medium and long term, and what methods to use, myclimate will advise on setting goals and focusing on certain stakeholders, which can result in anything from standalone approaches to a fully integrated strategy.

3. Adding concrete value for your company, your employees and the market

It’s important to identify in which area a company wants to integrate climate protection? Greater efficiency and CO₂ reduction in processes, products and services with less impact on the planet, positioning in the market, employees as internal ambassadors for more sustainability, or all of the above?

4. Take responsibility for unavoidable emissions by investing in Climate Protection Projects

Thanks to carbon impact financing, a brand ensures immediate and effective climate protection. Organisations take responsibility for their emissions by investing the equivalent of their calculated unavoidable CO2 emissions in climate protection projects that reduce the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions. This way, a company makes valuable and measurable contributions towards the achievement of climate goals and to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). That’s positive for the climate and the environment, for people locally, for the company’s positioning, and is in keeping with the corporate responsibility.

5. Progress tracking

With the help of automated, web-based tools and experts, myclimate documents a company’s progress and achievements. myclimate personalises this data for reporting and prepares them for contributions in line with international standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) or for the brand’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

One step further: With the Net-Zero Standard, the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) offers companies the world’s first framework for setting net-zero targets. These clear requirements enable companies to develop ambitious climate targets in line with the latest climate research findings and the 1.5°C target.

6. Communications

In order to publicise a brand’s commitment to climate protection and to inspire others, myclimate supports communication with external stakeholder groups such as customers or the media. By visibly participating in local projects, a brand is anchored in its immediate environment as a “corporate citizen”.
